2008 HEALTHCARE DESIGN
Architectural Showcase
First Care Health Center
Park River, North Dakota
THE SHARED VISION: The architect was charged to deliver a cost sensitive project which would take into account town history and sentiment. The design received enthusiastic community support. Realization of the project required the hard work and cooperation of the community, hospital board, employees and administration, medical staff, USDA, contractors consultants and architects.
THE INNOVATIVE DESIGN: Health care was scattered on all three levels of the 1950s hospital building with entrances in multiple locations. The project transforms the hospital into a one story, user friendly, patient-centered medical center with support services on upper and lower levels. Re-grading of the site created an accessible, centrally located entrance for the main level, originally a half story above ground level. |

< A welcoming, accessible entrance replaces a split level entry. The entrance grade and the existing city street were major design considerations. |

< Daylighting and soft touches highlight the birthing suite. The room is zoned with patient, staff, and family areas.

< Patients face clinic and hospital registration as they enter the building. The design stresses visibility, easy accesss and privacy issues. |

< In-pateint nusing station. Medical staff are provided different degrees of privacy, visual control and ease of work space through varied counter heights and the use of solid, obscure and clear galss partitions.

< Located across from in-patient nursing is a satellite station for semi-private rooms which double as pre- and porst-operative rooms.

< The hospital is historically faith based. A former chapel was "tucked away" and used infrequently. Staff has noted daily use of this new chapel area. The photo was taken before privacy glass was installed.
