THE SHARED VISION: Quality Critical Access Hospitals that can keep and attract skilled health care professionals are vital to the quality of life in small town America.  This multi-phase project transforms a 1950's hospital into a modern medical center.  At the outset the architect, working with Administrator Scott Thoreson, FACHE, devised a Critical Access Hospital concept designed for efficiency, flexibility and patient-centered care.

THE INNOVATIVE DESIGN: Seamless integration of new construction with the existing facility is accomplished as funding becomes available.  The process began with the merger of a four doctor clinic into the hospital setting.  Based on the project concept, Radiology, Laboratory, Business, Health Information and Patient Registration are shared.

< Benches provide seating in the public area which backs up to the healing garden outside the new patient wing.

< The new patient wing includes a healing garden and an in-patient lounge featuring windows with a view to the outside.

< The healing garden gives new patient rooms a natural view.

< From the reception area patients and visitors face the nursery and the donor wall.

< Solid walls, a higher partition and high and low counter space are features which provide for vision, accessibility and privacy in the care provider stations.

< Information access, supplies, soiled and clean linens are handled outside patient rooms.

< Surgical Suite.

< Homey furnishings, daylight and a view of the outdoors are features of this lounge.
