APPLETON MUNICIPAL HOSPITAL 2006 Minnesota Physician Architecture & Design Honor Roll Recipient Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital Sleepy Eye, Minnesota THE SHARED VISION: The Master Plan phase established the following objectives: 1. Patient-centered Care. 2. High Quality Medical Care. 3. Efficient Service. 4. Physician Recruitment. THE INNOVATIVE DESIGN: The integration of a freestanding, previously independent clinic and addition of new emergency, lab and radiology departments, technology and maternity suite were accomplished in multiple phases. Centralized areas are developed for overlapping tasks.
	< The highly visible common entry is protected by a canopy.
	< Durable, cleanable tile leads the visitor directly to the registration desk and a friendly face.
	< The patient lounge is brought in to the heart of the clinic. Skylights bring in natural light.
	< Diagnostic areas are laid out to maximize staff contact with patients and minimize patient scrutiny of equipment. Technology can be a source of stress for a patient.
	< Identical Emergency Department bays double as procedure rooms. A medical gas column allows staff access to all sides of the patient.
	< Laboratory space accomodates specialty equipment but is designed for flexibility.
	< The hospital care provider station is the in-patient communication home base.
	< Patient centered care design for the renovated patient rooms emphasizes comfort, privacy and dignity.
