: Faith : Sacred Spaces
Because of our vast experience
working with church-related space, we are often asked
to create sacred spaces for worship and reflection in
other facilties.
The sprititual center is a part of the design of
the Project Turnabout facility.
THE SHARED VISION: To provide an area
for reflection which expresses the spiritual element
of the twelve-step treatment program without replicating
symbols or forms that evoke a particular religion.
THE INNOVATIVE DESIGN: In the Spiritual
Center, stained glass portals in the peak of each face
allow light to travel through the space as the sun travels
across the sky during the day. It simultaneously reminds
the visitor of nature’s constant change and reliable
patterns. The Spiritual Center is a perfect square whose
walls face the cardinal directions. The flooring tile
matches the building grid. As one steps into the tile
circle the grid changes to follow the cardinal directions.
The stained glass is an artistic element, but also performs
a practical function. A combination
of stained and clear glass obscures occupants, but places them within
nature.
< A stained glass window in the spritual center maintains transparency bringing in the natural setting.
< The spritual center is set orthogonally with walls facing cardinal directions.
< The stained glass
window refers to the 12 step program and acknowledges a supreme being while avoiding reference to organized religion.
< This sacred
place provides a quiet spot for meditation and personal
counseling sessions.
